Yellow-legged Gull - Geelpootmeeuw - Larus michahellis

1-2: © Ruud Altenburg, 02-09-06. Erasmusgracht, Amsterdam. Atypical 1cy Yellow-legged Gull with prominently notched wing coverts and rather broad white tips to the tertials. Birds like these are easily confused with 1cy Herring Gull, but note the very worn plumage, the large number of replaced scapulars, the pale underparts and a stubby bill. The best characters unfortunately are not visible in these images but were observed in the field: a tapering tail bar and the absence of a conspicuous pale primary window. Atypische 1kj Geelpootmeeuw met opvallend gekartelde dekveren en nogal brede lichte toppen aan de tertials. Vogels al deze kunnen gemakkelijk verward worden met 1kj Zilvermeeuw, maar let op het gesleten kleed, het grote aantal vervangen schouderveren, de lichte onderdelen en een stompe snavel. De beste kenmerken zijn helaas niet zichtbaar in deze foto's maar werden wel in het veld genoteerd: een taps aflopende staartband en de afwezigheid van een opvallend licht venster in de handvleugel.
