In the field the mantle was pale grey with a blue cast, which is well visible in 2. The pale grey mantle suggests this is a graellsii; compare to the advanced bird in 6 showing arrested moult on P6, which probably is an intermedius. Moult-wise it's quite advanced: most wing coverts are adult-type feathers and it has replaced ao. the central rectrices to plain white feathers. The inner secondaries too are of the adult type (7). Such an advanced moult is not exceptional in graellsii, e.g. see red C73 or red C00. However, except for the mantle colour, structurally this bird too is rather different from the average graellsii. The bill is slender, rather long, slightly drooping and of a rather subdued colour. The legs are long and pinkish rather than yellow, which is unusual for a bird looking this advanced, as is the streaking in the neck. One odd feature are the very short wings. Given the spacing, the outermost feathers probably are P9-10, but I have not been able to assess this with certainty. The poor flight shot reveals a large moult gap, indicating that possibly it has problems (on 23-06-07 the moult score could be determined as P2 = P1, P3-6 missing/growing and P7-10 old). Normally by early June primary moult has only just commenced in 3cy birds. I'm at odds how to identify this bird. Some characters seem indicative of Heuglin's Gull L heuglini but the short wings and large moult gap do not fit any form of Lesser Black-backed Gull. Possibly it represents a hybrid Lesser Black-back x Herring Gull. Een atypische 3kj Kleine Mantelmeeuw. In het veld was de mantel lichtgrijs met een blauwe zweem, die goed zichtbaar is in 2. De lichtgrijze mantel suggereert dat dit een graellsii is; vergelijk met de vergevorderde vogel in 6 die gestaakte rui toont op P6, waarschijnlijk een intermedius. Qua rui is de vogel behoorlijk ver: de meeste dekveren zijn van het adult-type en oa. de centrale staartpennen zijn vervangen door geheel witte veren. Ook de binnenste armpennen zijn van het adulttype. Zulke vergevorde rui is niet uitzonderlijk in graellsii, zie bv. rood C73 or rood C00. Behalve de mantelkleur is deze vogel echter ook anders gebouwd dan de gemiddelde graellsii. De snavel is lang, slank en enigszins naar beneden gebogen en heeft een nogal fletse kleur. De poten zijn lang en meer roze-achtig dan geel, wat ongebruikelijk is voor vogels die zo ver zijn qua rui, net als de streping in de nek. Een vreemd kenmerk zijn de korte vleugels. De slechte foto in vlucht toont een groot ruigat, mogelijk een indicatie dat deze vogel problemen heeft (op 23-06-07 kon de rui in de hand vastgesteld worden: P2 = P1, P3-6 ontbrekend/groeiend en P7-10 oud). Normaal gesproken is de rui begin juni net gestart in 3kj vogels. Ik heb geen idee om welk taxon het hier gaat. Sommige kenmerken lijken Heuglins Meeuw L heuglini... te indiceren maar de korte vleugels en het grote ruigat past op geen enkele vorm van Kleine Mantel. Mogelijk gaat het om een hybride Kleine Mantel x Zilvermeeuw.
