1-2: © Ruud Altenburg, 21-08-04. Erasmusgracht, Amsterdam. Lesser Black-backed Gulls are known to replace the occasional covert here and there during their post-juvenile moult. This bird, however, has replaced many median and greater coverts in its left wing; in its right wing most of the greater coverts are missing and many medians have been replaced. Several tertials have been dropped as well. Contrary to this, rather few scapulars have been replaced, so one wonders if this should really be considered moult or if something else is at stake. Het is een bekend feit dat Kleine Mantelmeeuwen enige vleugeldekveren kunnen vervangen tijdens de postjuveniele rui. Deze vogel heeft echter vele middelste en grote dekveren vervangen in zijn linkervleugel; in de rechtervleugel ontbreken de meeste grote dekveren en zijn vele middelste vervangen. Verschillende tertials ontbreken eveneens. Daarentegen zijn vrij weinig schouderveren vervangen, dus je kunt je afvragen of er echt sprake is van rui of van iets anders.
